Award-winning artist: Jamie recently received a $100 savings bond for winning a statewide school-bus safety poster contest through the Washington Association for Pupil Transportation. Her entry first won at the Marysville School District level and then for the Northwest Washington region. It’s off to nationals now and a chance to win a $1,000 savings bond. “I basically did this for fun and it turned out to be an accomplishment. … My whole room is full of (drawings) I’ve done.”
Attention to detail: Spent the better part of two weeks working on her entry, which includes lots of detail from palm and fruit trees in fenced yards to a UBSAFE bus license plate. Loves to sketch and used a magazine she received from bus drivers, and pictures taken by her father, a landscaper, for more detail. Picture included her imagined “future house” and she drew a friend as the bus driver.
Big change ahead: Jamie, an eighth-grader, finishes middle school when Marysville schools get out for the summer July 19. Then it’s off to Marysville-Pilchuck High School in the fall.
“I’m off to Pilchuck. I’m a little nervous. My brothers have gone there and they keep telling me there is a lot of homework, and to get organized.”
Favorite book and music “The Giver” by Lois Lowry is favorite book. Likes Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears.
Future plans: Too early to predict a career, but art, acting and helping critters could figure into it. “I want to take art, drama and animal science classes (at Pilchuck).”
Away from school: Loves to Rollerblade and hopes to get her own in-line skates for her birthday.
Favorite memory: Being chosen by a friend last year to go to GameWorks to play for a day after her friend sold a prize-winning number of magazine subscriptions for a PTA fundraiser. “It was fun and it made me feel good she chose me.”
