Everett scores in the ninth inning to win a pitchers’ duel with Jackson, 1-0

Published 9:00 pm Tuesday, May 17, 2005

EVERETT – If a pitchers’ duel were ever defined, Tuesday’s bout between Everett’s Cory Mattson and Jackson’s Rachel Koenig-Eng would undoubtedly qualify.

The two batteries posted 12 strikeouts each, surrendering just a total of six hits. Through eight innings not a single runner crossed the plate at Lincoln Park Field.

“Not a lot of hitters were even getting the ball in play,” said Everett coach Kyle Peacocke. “It felt like whoever was going to make the first mistake was going to lose it.”

In the bottom of the ninth, the Seagulls managed some overdue offense, picking up two of the team’s three hits to notch the game’s only run in a 1-0 Wesco South victory.

Everett senior Jessica Luatua initiated the ninth-inning rally with a one-out double. Jessica Carey followed with a sacrifice bunt to get Luatua to third. Jackson then intentionally walked Mattson, who had previously recorded Everett’s only other hit. Seagulls sophomore Elizabeth Ritche finally broke the stalemate with a single that brought home Luatua.

The Seagulls have won eight of their last nine games.
