Clematis climbers perfect for patio

Clematis, the showy vine that twines its way up fences and trellises, can now take a central spot on the patio too.
Several new varieties introduced this year by breeder Raymond Evison promise to be smaller and easier to grow and maintain.
Unlike traditional varieties of clematis that can take over a trellis in one season, these patio varieties stop growing at about 3 feet tall.
Their smaller growth habits make them ideal for mixed containers on the deck or perhaps trailing down a hanging basket.
These varieties are bred to be disease resistant, vigorous growers with high flower and bud counts.
Evison’s collection includes Cezanne, a free-flowering variety that produces violet blooms that measure 6 to 7 inches wide.
Picardy produces pinkish-red petals and contrasting yellow sepals.
Versailles, the longest blooming in the collection, produces wine red 6-inch blooms.
Patio clematis are available locally at Molbak’s (425-483-5000) and Vibrant Plants (425-488-1155) in Woodinville, and Wight’s Garden and Floral (425-775-2614 in Lynnwood.
Molbak’s is offering a free demonstration, “Captivating Clematis: Designs for Garden and Patio with New Patio Clematis,” at 11 a.m. June 9. Tom Foley, an expert from Hines Horticultural, will discuss care and how to create displays with patio clematis.
