Pilot license seminar Saturday

A free seminar on the new Light Sport Pilot license will be offered from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Out of the Blue Aviation Flight School at the Arlington Airport.

The seminar will outline requirements for a Light Sport Pilot license. Light Sport aircraft available for instruction will be on display.

Cascadia picks vice president

Cascadia Community College has selected Richard Carvajal as its new vice president of student success services.

Carvajal will oversee financial aid, academic advising, student government, international student services and admissions.

He previously was dean of students at Independence Community College in Independence, Kan. Before that, he held administrative positions at colleges in South Carolina and Illinois.

Edmonds

New art program is for young kids

The Edmonds parks and recreation department this fall will offer KidzArt, an art education program for young children.

The program uses a simple drawing method and weekly format in which students produce original art.

“Squiggles to Grins” is for kids ages 2 to 4, with the cost for the six-week class at $52. “KidzArt Discover” is for kids ages 4 to 5, with the cost at $62. The classes meet on Mondays starting Sept. 11 at the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St.

Reception focuses on aging issues

Caring for your parents or grandparents? Wondering how elected officials will meet the needs of a growing population of individuals age 60 and up?

The Snohomish County Council on Aging’s legislative reception is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, at the Weyerhaeuser Room at Everett Station, 3201 Smith Ave.

The public is invited to learn about long-term care and aging services and speak with elected officials and candidates for office.

At 5:30 p.m., a brief program will feature individuals explaining why services such as Meals on Wheels, adult day care and in-home care are important to them and their loved ones.

Lynnwood

Rotary schedules fun run, car show

The Rotary Club of Lynnwood has scheduled its third annual Hi!5 Fun Run for Aug. 27.

The club also is planning its inaugural Hi!5 Car Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 26 at Edmonds Community College.

The Fun Run consists of 10K and 5K runs, a 2K walk and a kids’ dash beginning at the Alderwood mall. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Terraces at the mall.

The events will benefit student scholarships, children in need and more.

Marysville

Horse rescue and ranch open house

Four Winds Ranch and the Equine Rescue Association have planned an open house Sunday.

The Ranch plans a greased-pig contest, rooster rodeo and spaghetti feed. Events are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

All are welcome and children are encouraged to wear old clothes to enjoy the fun.

The rescue association “Hug a Horse Day” runs 1 to 5 p.m., and pony rides are planned, as well as other activities.

Both events are free and will take place at 2506 128th St. NE.

Sports talk for students, parents

Well-known coaching speaker Bruce Brown will talk to student athletes and their parents in a pair of events Aug. 29 at Monroe High School, 17001 Tester Road.

At 1 p.m., Brown will talk to students about self-motivation, being a good teammate, and having a positive attitude.

At 7 p.m., he will speak to parents about their role in school athletics.

Council schedules three hearings

Three public hearings are planned for the Mukilteo City Council meeting Monday.

Public comment is scheduled on the location of a new city hall, midyear changes to the budget and a lot-line appeal.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at City Hall, 4480 Chennault Beach Road.

Snohomish

Rider, horse win championship

Tara Christiansen of Snohomish competed in the Ford American Quarter Horse Youth World Championship in Fort Worth, Texas, on Aug. 7. She won a world championship along with her 7-year-old gelding TC Lena. The award came in the working cow horse class.

Highlights of the championship are scheduled to be featured on “America’s Horse,” AQHA’s weekly television series on TVG Network at 8 a.m. on Aug. 27 and at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 3.

Snohomish County

Council approves development

The Snohomish County Council voted unanimously this week to approve a development called Quinn’s Crossing.

The developer applied in 2005 to build 48 homes on 114 acres west of Echo Lake Road at 215th Place SE.

Neighbors appealed the development to a hearing examiner and then the County Council.

The council voted to require a monitoring well to test drinking water for coliform bacteria, nitrates and heavy metals. The tests must be done during construction and for two years after people move into the first phase of homes.
