Felix Sweetman had his day in the sun with the media today, as pretty much all the gathered media wanted to talk to him. And unlike some guys who rarely face questions, he seemed very relaxed and composed.
And I think anyone who talked to him walked away hoping that he would get on the field. He talked about how much he has always wanted to be a Husky, and that he turned down a couple of scholarship offers at smaller schools in order to play at Washington. At one point he got a bit emotional thinking about not being able to come back next week and go to practice and be with his teammates. We’ll have more about Sweetman tomorrow.
So will he play Saturday? Hard to say. Carl Bonnell is apparently doing better and his bruised thigh is getting loose, so he should practice today and will probably start on Saturday. Johnny DuRocher hasn’t been cleared to practice today with his concussion and offensive coordinator Tim Lappano thought that weather or not DuRocher would play might be decided Wednesday. Lappano said he would love to get Sweetman on the field at some point Saturday. Sweetman will practice as the No. 2 Tuesday and will be backed up by Sonny Shackelford. Shackelford will actually get a couple of snaps on Wednesday, in fact, just in case.
No other real news from this afternoon. Tyrone Willingham said that Jason Wells may play this week (he’s back on the depth chart) and freshman linebacker Donald Butler may go as well. Fans will like the fact that Ashlee Palmer was hanging around today, and he’s been a regular at most of the home games, so the indiciations are that he will try to be a Husky next season.
Lappano talked about some players who are redshirting who have impressed him other than Jake Locker. The first person he pointed out was receiver D’Andre Goodwin, who has been nicknamed “The Flea” because of his quickness. Lappano also pointed out offensive linemen Cody Habben and Ryan Tolar as guys who have been good. As for J.R. Hasty, Lappano said he’s doing well and seems to be back on track academically.
