Shrine Game Today
Published 9:00 pm Friday, January 19, 2007
The East-West Shrine Game is today and two former Huskies and three former Cougars will be on the West team, which is being coached by former Denver Broncos coach Dan Reeves.
Punter Sean Douglas and defensive back Dashon Goldson will represent Washington, and defensive end Mkristo Bruce, defensive back Tyron Brackenridge and offensive lineman Charles Harris will be there for WSU.
It’s a big opportunity for both of the former Huskies to help their potential pro careers. Douglas had another good season for the UW but he was also fairly inconsistent. An all-star game is always a good chance for a specialist to show what they can do on a national stage. For Goldson, it’s an even bigger chance. He was slowed all season by a high ankle sprain after coming into the year as maybe the Husky with the best pro potential. He’s certainly got the size and athleticism to be an NFL defensive back but this is a chance for him to show what he can do against some of the top players in the country.
There’s a bunch of other Pac-10 players on the West team: UCLA kicker Justin Medlock and defensive end Justin Hickman; Cal linebacker Desmond Bishop; Arizona safety Michael Johnson; USC linebacker Dallas Sartz; Oregon offensive lineman Enoka Lucas; and Oregon State offensive lineman Adam Koets.
Two other notables on the West team are Fresno State receiver Paul Williams, the younger brother of Husky defensive backs coach J.D. Williams and late Husky Curtis Williams, and Whitworth tight end Michael Allan, a Bellevue native.
The East team is coached by legendary Dolphins coach Don Shula and features several members of national champion Florida, including quarterback Chris Leak, as well as Ohio State and Michigan.
The game is being played at Reliant Stadium in Houston. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN2 so you’ll have to do some flipping if you plan on watching the UW basketball game.
