FEDERAL WAY – Overshadowed by Snohomish’s dominating performance were some fine performances by other Western Conference relays and individuals Saturday during the 4A state meet at the King County Aquatics Center.
Perhaps the conference’s most shining moment came in the 200-yard individual medley where Marysville-Pilchuck’s Trevot LeValley, Oak Harbor’s John Hu and Jackson’s Jimmy Rogers finished 4, 5 and 6 behind Snohomish’s Garren Riechel, who was third.
Rogers was also sixth in the 100 backstroke while teammate Robbie Burns finished fifth in the 200 freestyle and sixth in 100 butterfly to lead the Timberwolves to ninth place in the team standings (93 points).
Bothell’s Ben Nicholas won the diving (405.20) and teammate Tim Clendaniel was fifth ahead of M-P’s Taylor Gibson in sixth. Kamiak senior Jon Bedier placed ninth.
Bothell’s Nick Arneson and Lake Stevens’ Olson were fifth and eighth, respectively, in the 50 freestyle.
Bothell’s Winchell earned second in the 500 freestyle. M-P’s LeValley was fifth and Jackson’s Elijah Pleasant sixth.
Shorewood placed sixth in the 200 medley relay and eighth in the 200 freestyle relay where Lake Stevens was sixth.
Notes
Hall inducts former Bruin: Ken Quarterman, who won four individual state titles for the Cascade Bruins in the 1980’s was inducted into the Washington Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association Hall of Fame Saturday. In 1986, and again in 1987, Quarterman won the 100 and 200 freestyle races. In 1987 he set a state record in the 200 with a time of 1:38.51. That effort still stands as the third fastest in state history. The award was presented by Snohomish girls coach John Pringle, whose mother Joanne coached Quarterman at Cascade.
Gonzo fans: Snohomish coach Rob Serviss said the boisterous and fired-up Snohomish fans are an important component of the team’s success. He was especially happy to see a larger number of students in the crowd. “They were all dressed up crazy and making a lot of noise,” Serviss said. “We need more of that in swimming, which gets overlooked at a lot of schools … the kids were here supporting their friends and it’s great.”
3A state meet: Shorecrest’s Tyler Hayden finished second in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly. Hayden was the only Wesco swimmer to qualify for a championship final.
