Volunteer firefighters from Snohomish Fire and Rescue and North County Fire and Emergency Medical Services recently graduated from recruit school.

The 17 firefighters completed about 275 hours of classroom and hands-on instruction, including live fire training and motor vehicle extrication. The new firefighters already are responding to calls.

North County graduates are Lorn Reid, Nicholas Raught, Dan Welk, Will Vason, Michael McKeon, Brandyn Raught, Norm Odegard and Don Sweet.

Snohomish Fire and Rescue graduates are Kyle Davis, Michael Lamphere, Jason Leighty, Nicholas Meyer, Jesse Nordlund, Matt Nuttbrock, Karisa Rife, Ryan Stevie and Caillus Williams.

Zonta Club awards business scholarship

The Zonta Club of Everett recently awarded its Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship to Amanda Rees, a junior at the University of Washington working toward her bachelor’s degree in accounting.

Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarships help women overcome gender barriers, club members said. Klausman, a leader in Zonta International, left a bequest to the Zonta International Foundation, from which the Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship Program was established.

South Everett Lions Club honors members

South Everett Lions Club recently recognized several members at its annual awards, initiation and installation dinner.

Longtime member Bob Well was honored with the Melvin Jones Fellowship for outstanding humanitarian work. Well has served many years on the Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation of Snohomish County. A donation was made in his honor to Lions Sightfirst II to help eliminate blindness around the world.

Lion Wilma Tilly received the Lion of the Year award for many hours of service on club projects, but especially for her work on improving eyesight within the community.

Two new members were initiated by district governor Joe Oriente. Members welcomed Becky Gibbons and Chris Bush into the club.

Oriente also installed officers for the 2007-08 year. Serving are president Tom Knowlton, first vice president Elta Morgan, second vice president Vern Klotzbuecher, secretary Rosemary Stallings, treasurer Dixon Marshall, Tail Twister Bob Well and Lion Tamer Bill Motteler. Directors are Len Olsen, Becky Gibbons and Chris Bush. Immediate past president is Rick Foort.

Manry heads to Legion Boys Nation

Aaron Manry, 18, a senior at Archbishop Murphy High School, is one of 98 high school students from throughout the United States chosen to attend the American Legion Boys Nation, July 20-28 in the Washington, D.C., area.

Aaron is one of two delegates from Washington state, an honor based on leadership skills, academic record and activity at American Legion Boys State.

The American Legion Boys Nation program provides a close look at the federal government, along with visits to historical sites and government institutions. Each American Legion Boys Nation delegate represents his home state as a “senator” who participates in mock legislative action.

In addition, federal lawmakers, traditionally including President Bush, participate in the activities at the American Legion Boys Nation Program. Graduates of the program include former President Clinton.

Music teachers attend conference

Snohomish County Music Teachers Association members Judy Baker, Jackie Marais and Gail Tremblay of Everett; Cynthia Whalen, Jane Campbell and Iris Ingram of Lake Stevens; and Rick Seifert of Mukilteo recently attended the Washington State Music Teachers Association conference at Washington State University.

Students who performed in honors recitals were Anna Freedman, student of Tremblay; Joshua Lim and Matthew Palumbo, students of Baker; and Sarah Welliver, a student of Ingram. In addition, Baker presented a lecture.

Everett Rotary club names new officers

Roy Yates of Everett is the new president of the Rotary Club of Everett. He is to serve in the position through June 2008.

Yates, a University of Washington alumnus, has been a Rotary member since 1988. His community service also includes membership on the Everett School Board and the board of the YMCA of Snohomish County.

Other Rotary officers are vice president Bob Leach; president-elect Larry Byers; presidential nominee Kevin Morris; past president Rose Goulet; treasurer Brad Seltzer; historian Larry O’Donnell; and secretary Bill Dobler.

New and continuing board members are Linnea Covington, Janet Pritchard, Deborah Wright, Bob Dobler, Betsy Baker, Peter Cattle, Ron Edlin and Connie Wittren.

Habitat for Humanity elects new officers

Clifford Benson of Snohomish has been elected president of Habitat for Humanity of Snohomish County.

The retired Weyerhaeuser vice president has been active with the organization for about six years. He started as a construction volunteer and joined the board in 2006.

Other officers are: vice president of operations Derek Andrews, vice president of site selection Sandy Kaduce, vice president of finance Jan Kallshian, vice president of construction Pam LeSesne and secretary Kristin Wood.

Camano women help Midwest flood victims

Linda Robinson and Sally Odenborg of Camano Island, members of the American Red Cross Island County Chapter Camano Island Disaster Action Team, are on assignment in Oklahoma and Kansas.

The women are there to assist families affected by floods and help provide for their recovery needs.

Jaycees parade had volunteers, sponsors

The Everett Jaycees had many volunteers and more than 80 entries involved in its Fourth of July Parade.

Air Force veteran Kim Blunt served as grand marshal.

The Everett Jaycees, a group of young professionals ages 21 to 40 who develop leadership skills through community involvement, have organized the parade for many years. Parade chairwoman Mikki Richards and her family have been in charge for three years.

Horizon Bank, Ariel Screen Printing and Design, Mazda Motors of Everett, and the city of Everett provided support for the parade, the club reported.

Stanwood-Camano grants awarded

The Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation recently awarded community grants to several organizations for projects benefiting the community.

They are Senior Services of Island County for its Senior Nutrition Program, Sno-Isle Library Foundation for its Connecting With Teens program, Stanwood Lions Foundation for its Lions Park upgrade, Camano Animal Shelter for its low-cost spay/neuter program, and Island County Sheriff’s Office for night-vision equipment.

Assistance League receives Boeing grant

The Assistance League of Everett recently received a $10,000 grant from the Boeing Co. to help fund Operation School Bell.

Operation School Bell provides school clothing to in-need children from 14 school districts throughout Snohomish County.

A total of 2,814 children were clothed with the help of the program during the past school year. Since opening Operation School Bell in 1965, the organization has helped more than 49,746 students in the county.

Rotary donates to St. Vincent de Paul

Everett Rotary Club recently donated $500 to the Beds for Children program at St. Vincent de Paul of Everett.

The money will be used to give beds to children who are otherwise sleeping on the floor, said St. Vincent de Paul leaders.

Inmates donate gifts to nonprofit agencies

The Twin Rivers Unit at the Monroe Correctional Complex recently held its annual Pow Wow, which was open to family members of inmates.

American Indian food was served and ceremonial dances were performed. Inmates created and gave handmade thank-you gifts such as leather purses and decorated wooden boxes to each family member who attended.

The Wolf Pack group and the Community Aid Coalition group made enough gifts that many will be donated to local nonprofit groups including the Monroe Senior Center, Matthew House and the Snohomish County Boys &Girls Clubs. The group will also donate to the annual DSHS Foster Parent Appreciation Conference, the Monroe School District Foundation and to many American Indian foster children in Snohomish County

Essay winners named by horse farm

Winners of the 2007 Horse Country Farm Essay Contest include children and teens from throughout Snohomish County.

The contest is sponsored by Horse Country Farm of Granite Falls, which then offers horse camp tuition discounts for the essay winners.

Winners in the seventh- to ninth-grade division are first-place essayist Desirae Bloomquist, a ninth-grader from Snohomish, and eighth-grader Skye Donker of Everett.

Karley Benoff, a sixth-grader from Everett, and Grace Bertman, a fourth-grader from Granite Falls, tied for first place in the fourth- through sixth-grade division. Jaclyn Greathouse, a sixth-grader from Camano Island; sixth-grader Savanna Hemiack from Lake Stevens; Brianne King, a fifth-grader from Marysville; and fourth-grader Aubreyana Clapton from Lake Stevens tied for second place. Third-place winners are Victoria Santori, a sixth-grader from Lake Stevens; Nathalie Knowles, a sixth-grader from Everett; Inga Nysether, a fourth-grader from Lake Stevens; and Nina Selset, a fifth-grader from Lake Stevens.

In the second- to third-grade division, Mika Silver, a third-grader from Lake Stevens, had the winning essay. Second-place winners were Amanda Bloomquist, a third-grader from Snohomish, and Anna Dominick, a third-grader from Lake Stevens. Third-place winners were Arden Donker, a third-grader from Everett, and Kaitlyn Stevens of Lake Stevens.
