Freshman cornerback says he’s ready

The media just finished with access to players for the day, and freshman cornerback Vonzell McDowell Jr. just set an early-season record for largest press gathering, non-Jake Locker division.
McDowell, a freshman from Seattle’s Rainier Beach High School, was named a starting cornerback on the depth chart the school put out Monday. He had been locked in a battle with walk-on Cory Nicol for the spot, but Nicol left the team because of complications from a groin injury that was surgically repaired last year.
McDowell, whose last game action was against Timberline High School in the state playoffs, is now set to line up against Division I receivers Friday night on ESPN.
He admitted to being nervous (that may have been due more to the TV camera and recorders in front of him than the upcoming game) but said he’d be ready.
“I’m a little nervous right now,” he said. “I’m only a freshman, but when the game comes, I will be ready.”
