Washington guard Ryan Appleby will miss up to six weeks with a fractured thumb. The senior from Stanwood suffered the injury in practice Wednesday, hitting his hand on a teammate’s elbow trying to knock loose a rebound.
Appleby, one of three Husky captains, averaged 10.5 points per game last season and set a school record with 84 three-point field goals. The injury is to his shooting hand. He said he is scheduled to have surgery tomorrow and hopes to be back sooner than the six weeks doctors anticipate.
“They told me six weeks,” he said. “But I think I’ll be back sooner than that.”
Appleby said he’s staying in good spirits despite a delayed start to his senior season.
“It’s hard, but it’s kind of part of the sport,” he said. “Everybody gets to it eventually. I’ve just got to deal with it and try to get back on the court as soon as I can.”
In other Husky basketball news, the Huskies were picked to finish eighth in the Pac-10 in the preseason media poll that was released today. UCLA received all but one of the first place votes (WSU got the other one) and is the top pick, followed by WSU, Oregon, Arizona, Stanford, USC, Cal, Washington, Arizona State and Oregon State.
