Kamiak dedicates ballfield to Geiger

MUKILTEO — Jim Geiger is now a permanent part of Kamiak baseball.

The former assistant coach, who died in December, was honored in a big way Friday during the Knights’ season opener with Lakeside. Kamiak named its field Geiger Field, and had the family of the former coach on hand to throw out the first pitch.

“It was the best part of the night,” said Knights coach Steve Merkley, whose team lost the game 3-1. “It was an emotional night, but it went really well. We had probably 300 people there when we usually only have about 50 or so.”

Geiger’s family kept the first pitch thrown out, while the team retrieved the first live pitch thrown to put in a trophy case later. They also presented a bronze plaque with phrases Geiger was known to say.

“The family got to keep the first pitch and we’re keeping the first live pitch,” Merkley said. “The plaque was really nicely done, too.”

The only game highlight for Kamiak was a solo home run by Alex Clark in the seventh inning. It was one of just three hits the Knights were able to muster on the night, as Lakeside took command early with a run in the first and two more in the fourth.

Merkely said Kamiak is currently working toward a scholarship fund in Geiger’s name that will annually go to a baseball senior. They are putting together a benefit softball game, currently scheduled for sometime in August, to help build the fund.
