EVERETT — With just minutes to play Friday, it appeared to everyone Kamiak was going to earn its seventh soccer shutout of the season.
Well, to everyone except Tye Hastings.
The Jackson sophomore booted through a goal in the 68th minute to forge overtime and eventually a 1-1 tie with Kamiak at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Hastings didn’t boost the Timberwolves to a win, but he did help them avoid their fourth loss of the season.
“It was good, but we were hoping for a win. Still, we’re satisfied with it,” said Hastings, after two extra periods of play failed to change the tie. “I think the goal motivated us and got me going more, but they cover each other really well. They drop in support really nice.”
Hastings’ goal came from 15 yards out after a Kamiak defender stumbled and fell down. It seemed to breathe new energy into the Jackson offense, but the Timberwolves couldn’t finish opportunities in both a first and second overtime.
Kamiak also had its chances. With just seconds to play in regulation, Dylan Gaddy headed a crossing pass toward the goal that was bobbled by keeper Eric Hodel before being contained. Then there was the 67 minutes before Hastings’ goal when it seemed the Knights had control.
“We didn’t finish strong. We took off the gas,” Kamiak coach Garfield Scott said. “We started off well, passing the ball well. We were playing to our strengths. In the second half of the second half, we kind of got away from it.”
Kamiak took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute on a goal by Karsten McIntosh. Jackson, which has already clinched a district playoff berth, moved to 10-3-1 with the tie. The Knights are now 7-4-3.
