Tuesday notes

We’re back to seeing only the first 25 minutes of practice after an open practice yesterday, so not a lot to report from today from that standpoint. The most interesting thing we saw in those first few minutes was that freshman WR/TB Chris Polk was working out with the running backs, not the receivers.

Polk, who enrolled early to participate in spring football, was listed as the starting slotback in April, but played more running back than receiver in high school. On Tuesday, he indicated to reporters that he would prefer playing tailback. He worked with the running backs at Monday’s practice, and appeared to be doing so again today.

Willingham said Polk’s role is “Yet to be determined. We’re still in the process of developing what that plan will be.”

Willingham did acknowledge that Polk might be more comfortable at tailback.

“That’s something that he did, he has a history there, but at the same time, he has, we think, a great many talents,” he said. “And what you want to do is use those and maximize those to the best and the fullest of your football team and for him. I think he does have a sense more of self at the tailback position because that’s where he spent more of his time.”

Willingham also briefly addressed Chris Izbicki’s legal problems.

“I’ve talked to Chris about that situation and we are aware of it,” he said. “Chris obviously is very remorseful about what took place, the embarrassment to himself, the embarrassment to his family, and definitely to this football program, and he is willing to take the proper steps that those kind of things are a one-time occurrence. He will be disciplined within the structure of our team, and we’ll let that sit where it is.”
