Seahawks make roster moves

SEATTLE — The Seattle Seahawks’ decision to use a valuable draft pick on a long snapper won’t pay any dividends this season.
On Tuesday, when the team had to make five roster moves to get down to the 75-man limit, rookie long snapper Tyler Schmitt was among the players on the outside looking in. Schmitt, a sixth-round pick from San Diego State, was placed on injured reserve and will miss the entire 2008 season.
Schmitt has been nursing a sore back for more than a week. To fill his snapping duties, Seattle signed University of West Virginia product Tim Lindsey.
Also going onto IR was offensive lineman William Robinson, who hurt his knee in the preseason opener at Minnesota.
University of Washington product Omare Lowe was among two players released by the Seahawks on Tuesday as the team cut down to a 75-man roster limit. Lowe and wide receiver Joel Filani were released, and linebacker Will Herring was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list.
Herring has yet to pass his pre-camp physical because of a condition that causes muscle strains. He was eligible for the PUP list because he had not practiced at training camp.
Herring will not be eligible to begin playing until after the first six games of the regular season.
