Ball State officials said injured receiver Dante Love will probably never play football again.
Love was hurt during the second quarter of a game Saturday night at Indiana and underwent a 5-hour operation Sunday for a broken spine and an injury to his spinal cord.
The university had said after the surgery that Love could move his arms and legs.
“Due to the injury Dante sustained, his football career is expected to be over,” coach Brady Hoke told reporters during his weekly news conference Monday. “He should have normal and healthy functions for the rest of his life. He touched a lot of lives, and he will continue to do so.”
Love entered Saturday’s game as the nation’s leader in yards receiving per game (144.3), and the fleet 5-foot-10, 179-pound senior was considered an NFL draft prospect.
NOTRE DAME: Prosecutors will review police reports before deciding whether to file formal charges against Notre Dame tight end Will Yeatman and center Mike Golic Jr., son of an ESPN television host. They were among nearly 40 people arrested on preliminary alcohol charges at a weekend party.
Police reports could be filed, but the prosecutor’s office did not know how quickly decisions on charges would be made.
Yeatman, 20, faced preliminary charges of consumption of alcohol by a minor, false informing and resisting arrest, while Golic, 18, faced a preliminary charge of consumption of alcohol by a minor, Police Sgt. William Redman said.
Women’s basketball player Brittany Mallory, 19, also faced a preliminary charge of minor consumption.
Yeatman could face more serious charges because he pleaded guilty in February to drunken driving and reckless driving, and the plea agreement said if Yeatman stayed out of trouble for a year, the drunken-driving charge would be dismissed.
NORTH CAROLINA: When the Tar Heels learned they would be without their quarterback T.J. Yates for at least six weeks because he broke his left ankle, they didn’t have time to mope. Instead, they professed their confidence in backups Cameron Sexton and Mike Paulus.
Coach Butch Davis hasn’t yet decided whether the starter for this week’s visit to Miami will be the redshirt freshman Paulus or Sexton, a junior who started five games under ex-coach John Bunting in 2006 but hasn’t played since.
