Camp Fire service honor kept a surprise

Who knew Camp Fire folks could be so sneaky?

A great surprise was pulled off Thursday at the Camp Fire USA Snohomish County Council’s annual WoHeLo Luncheon.

Myrna and Bob Overstreet of Everett received this year’s Lou Denney Award, which recognizes exceptional community service that has a significant impact on the youth of Snohomish County.

Bob Overstreet knew that Camp Fire would be honoring his wife, Myrna, this year, but she was kept in the dark. He invited many of their friends and family to lunch, not knowing that he was being honored as well.

The secret plan was a success.

“What a surprise for them both,” said Toby Brown, capital campaign coordinator.

Eighty-eight wonderful folks adopted dogs Sunday at “Barktober Fest” at the Academy of Canine Behavior in Bothell.

Andrea Logan with Pawsitive Alliance said many of the adoptees were adult and larger dogs.

“We actually had several small dogs not get adopted at the event,” Logan says. “A lot of people came just looking for good family dogs — with an open mind. Which is great.”

Learn how to take care of your dwelling before storm season hits. Emergency Manager Mike Simmons says Stanwood-Camano Fire Department sponsors a winter preparedness program at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Camano Senior and Community Center, 606 Arrowhead Road on Camano Island.

Preparations are a whole lot cheaper than repairs and replacement, he notes.

Gal-a-Palooza (formerly Girls Night Out) is planned for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday by the Arts Council of Snohomish County.

Visit the Historic Monte Cristo Hotel at 1507 Wall St. in Everett to meet designers and enjoy cake walks, belly dancing, 1940s shoes, facials and more.

Michelle Denton with the Arts Council says men are welcome — if they dare.

Fun fact: Dale Amundsen says Thursday’s Chilifest at Evergreen Washelli at Bothell was “a gas.”

Groan.

There were almost 200 tasters.

“A few of our 18 chili chefs came close to running out of their concoctions and we blew a circuit breaker in the process of keeping everything hot,” Amundsen said. “The Bothell Fire Department sent six of their firefighters to join our panel of judges. They were hoping they wouldn’t have indigestion that night for the rest of their shift.”

Steve and Marlene Hofer, owners of Steve’s CafĂ© on Main Street in Bothell, were joined by Peg Dowd from Shannon’s Flowers in winning the peoples’ choice award for their Dowd/Hofer Chili.

Steve Hofer was the chef behind the chili recipe that won the judges’ choice for the Mr. Meaty award.

“Several folks appreciated free Alka-Seltzer and Beano.”
