Lynnwood hires boys soccer coach

Once a standout player for the Lynnwood High School boys soccer team, Greg White is excited to have a new role with the Royals.

White, a 1987 Lynnwood graduate, was named the school’s head boys soccer coach on Tuesday. White coached the program’s junior-varsity squad the past six seasons.

“From an alumni perspective, I’m very excited,” said White, a four-year varsity member and two-time All-Wesco selection in the 1980s.

White replaces former Mark Heberlein* and takes over a team that went 0-17 in 2008.

“We’re excited to have Greg take over our boys soccer program,” Lynnwood High athletic director Rob McMains said in a press release. “Over the years he has shown a commitment to building the Lynnwood soccer program, and he’s earned this opportunity to take the reigns.

“Our soccer players know and trust him,” McMains added. “The kids know he genuinely cares about them as people.”

White said he looks forward to the challenge of getting the Royals back on track. Although the program is not blessed with many select-team players, it’s a diverse group that features athletes who during any given year represent about 10 countries.

“It’s like a World Cup atmosphere,” White said.
