Prep girls basketball: Glacier Peak stages comeback victory

Published 11:30 pm Friday, December 12, 2008

SNOHOMISH — With college scouts in the stands, Division 1 recruit Marjorie Heard led the contest in scoring, but the star of the show may have been Miranda Granger in Glacier Peak’s 44-39 come-from-behind Wesco South victory over Jackson Friday at Glacier Peak High School.

“If I had to give a game ball to anyone I’d give it to her,” Glacier Peak head coach Brian Hill said, noting that Granger took three charges in the contest.

In the third quarter, Heard was sent to the bench after picking up her fourth foul, but freshmen Katie Hawkins, Taylor Rasmussen and Torrey Hill rallied the Grizzlies and turned an eight-point deficit into a one-point disadvantage entering the fourth quarter.

Heard came back from the bench midway through the fourth and two minutes later went baseline for a layin which gave the Grizzlies a one-point advantage.

Jackson went to a full-court press on the next Glacier Peak possession but Glacier Peak scored once more, forcing Jackson to foul. Glacier Peak closed out the game on a 6-0 run and was 5-for-8 at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

Said Hill about the performance of the three freshman: “It makes our bench deeper. It’s nice knowing our intensity won’t drop off.”
