Prep basketball: Cascade’s McGrath scores 49 points in loss to Arlington

EVERETT — Chris McGrath set a school record for Cascade on Thursday night with 49 points, however it wasn’t enough to get past Arlington, which won the Wesco North game 79-75.

“The most disappointing thing is he is such a team player. He is a kid that is going to feel the worst about this,” Cascade coach Jamar Williams said. “He doesn’t care about the 49. He wants to win.

McGrath was 14-for-16 from the field, including 3-for-4 from beyond the 3-point line. He was 12-for-13 from the free-throw line, the one miss costing him a 50-point game.

“I’ve never seen a more efficient scorer than him,” Williams said.

Cascade led by 10 points in the third quarter before Arlington got back in the game.

“When you have a 10-point lead you have to close it out,” Williams said. “We took our foot off the gas a little bit.

“They did a great job of being active and staying aggressive,” Williams said of Arlington’s performance.

Arlington was 38-for-44 from the free-throw line.
