Arlington: City establishes storm water hotline

City officials are asking people to call a new hotline if they see or know of illegal or accidental spills of toxic materials onto the ground or into streams or the city’s storm water drainage system.

The 24-hour number, 360-403-4600, is to be used for reporting spills of materials such as paint, fuel, oil, muddy water and garbage, Arlington public works director James Kelly said.

While the city’s goal is not to find fault but rather to protect the local waters, those who willfully discharge illegal substances could be prosecuted, Kelly said. Those who call the hotline can request that their personal information be kept confidential.

Emergencies still should be reported to 911, he said.
