MARYSVILLE — Two brothers were without a home Tuesday night after a discarded cigarette sparked a fire at their house.

Firefighters were called to the 700 block of Beach Avenue about 8 p.m. after one of the residents noticed flames coming up the back of the house, Marysville Fire District spokeswoman Kristen Thorstenson said.

Crews found heavy smoke and flames in the attic area but were able to put the fire out before it spread to the rest of the home, Thorstenson said.

The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire was caused by discarded smoking materials.

The two brothers living at the house couldn’t stay there, Thorstenson said. They didn’t have renter’s insurance.

“Remember, if you smoke, put it out — all the way out,” she said.
