Lake Stevens Fire, EvCC protect kids
Lake Stevens Fire Marshal Robert Marshall visited Everett Community College to meet with student nurses and talk about poisons. The visit was part of their partnership in the Risk Watch Program.
Student nurses Tara Houes and Monnette Poquiz visited schools to teach children how to recognize the similarities and differences between candy and medications and what to do in case of a poisoning emergency.
Snohomish boy gives birthday cash
Nathan Aplin of Snohomish recently presented a $300 check to Assistance League of Everett’s Operation School Bell program.
Instead of gifts for his ninth birthday, Nathan asked that friends and family bring donations for the program as well as canned goods for the Snohomish Food Bank.
Once the money was collected, Nathan delivered the check to Charlotte Romo, chairwoman of Operation School Bell. He and his group got to see how the money would be used to purchase clothing for kids in need.
Assistance League’s Operation School Bell has provided more than 3,400 students with school clothing this year.
Eagle Scout repairs Everett nature trail
Grady McGuire of Lake Stevens was recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a special ceremony held at the South Lake Stevens Grange.
More than 100 friends, family members, and Scouts attended the event.
Grady is a member of Troop 42 and a senior at Lake Stevens High School.
For his Eagle Scout Project, he repaired and upgraded the nature park trail at Forest Park in Everett. The service project involved months of planning, organizing and coordinating.
Grady received support from Barry Martin and the Everett Parks Department, Kit Shanholtzer from Lake Stevens High School, Lake Stevens American Legion Post 181, the Wolfkiel family, Ed and Tammie Jones, Rock and Judy Talbot, Mark Lippold and Gary McDonald.
Troop 42 is chartered by American Legion Post 181 in Lake Stevens.
Lynnwood police introduce officers
Jeff Norris and Agi Wysocki were recently welcomed to the Lynnwood Police Department.
Norris worked previously for the Duvall Police Department. He began his law enforcement career in 1991 as a reserve in Duvall. His full-time work began in 1997.
Wysocki graduated from the police academy in October. She wanted to serve because she likes the challenge and the opportunity to learn.
Animal shelter gets 200 pounds of food
Everett Public Facilities District, Global Spectrum employees and the World’s Toughest Rodeo staff collected more than 200 pounds of pet food and $143 for the Everett Animal Shelter.
The rodeo audience was encouraged to donate an item of nonperishable pet food to benefit the animals at the shelter. Those who donated received a discount offer to the rodeo event.
Trumpet quintet plays in Virginia
Christi Wans of Oak Harbor and Stephen Pickard of Everett, members of the Central Washington University Trumpet Quintet, were recently invited to perform at the National Trumpet Competition at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.
Also performing was Paige Anderson of Mountlake Terrace.
Students clear wetland for planting
Cedar Wood Elementary students have been clearing nonnative plants from a wetland area on their school campus as part of a restoration project.
The children volunteered their recess time to work and now have the area ready from planting.
The Pilchuck Audubon Society has given a grant of $250 to purchase native plants for the site.
