SULTAN — It took two overtimes and a shootout but Lakewood finally got the upperhand in the battle for the Cascade Conference’s No. 3 seed to the 2A District playoffs with a 2-1 shootout win against Sultan.

With the win Lakewood (7-6 in league, 9-6 overall) moved ahead in the standings, and can clinch the No. 3 seed with a win against Cedarcrest in its final game. If the Cougars fall and Sultan (6-7, 7-7-1) defeats Granite Falls, the teams will meet in a playoff game for the final spot, with the loser going to a play-in game.

“This game was a typical Lakewood-Sultan game,” Sultan head coach Mark Raney said, “it could have gone either way. That’s the way these games always are.”

Joseph Hawkins scored the first goal of the game for Lynnwood from a Craig Hooks assist in the 45th minute. It took about 30 minutes for the Turks to respond with a goal from Juan Camayo off a penalty kick.

After that it was scoreless until the shootout. Both teams came up short in their fourth attempts. Sultan missed it’s fifth attempt, and Lakewood capitalized on the opportunity to win the game.

“It was a good effort by good kids,” Raney said.

Lakewood’s senior midfielder Brian Star left a strong impression on Raney, by hustling thoroughout the game.

“He’s just a very, very good player,” Raney said. “He challenges everything and really controlled his side of the field.”

On senior night, Raney started the game with his injured senior in goal. Matthew Beckers, who has a broken collarbone, got the start for the Turks before being relieved by Steven Losleven. James Hoback had goalkeeper duties for Lakewood.

Raney-and his players-are looking forward to a potential rematch with the Cougars very soon.

“We never forget anything about these games,” Raney said. “We can’t wait to play them again.”

King’s 7, Granite Falls 1: At Shoreline, Nick Swanson had a hat-trick for King’s, scoring in the 22nd minute (Gunner Illduso assist), 73rd minute (Ryan McCormick assist) and 77th minute (Joseph Jeong assist). Ryan McCormick added two goals, scoring in the 30th minute (Ryan Gamache assist) and 57th minute (Brett Simons assist). King’s also had goals from Trevor Bartels in the 28th minute, and Gunner Illduso (Simons assist) in the 58th minute. Aaron VanGorkum was in goal for King’s (10-3 league, 12-3 overall). Granite Falls goal was scored by Paul Gumke (Tommy Mitchell assist) in the 47th minute. Kevin Ahrens was in goal for Granite Falls (1-12, 2-13).

Cedarcrest 2, Coupeville 1 (shootout): At Coupeville, Coupeville’s Ben Hayes scored in the 51st minute to take a 1-0 lead, but Heath Olson (Cory Johnson assist) tied the game for Cedarcrest in the 79th minute. The game continued to a shootout, which Cedarcrest won 6-4 on a C.J. Mowry shot. Colin McHargue was the goalkeeper for Cedarcrest (10-3 league, 11-4 overall), as was Jason Stevenson for Coupeville (5-8, 7-8).
