COUPEVILLE — There is reason to be excited if you are a Coupeville boys soccer fan.
The Wolves defeated Nooksack Valley 4-0 Tuesday to advance in the 1A District 1 playoffs. The Wolves play at Meridian at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in a winner-to-bi-district game.
It took Coupeville (9-8 overall) most of the first half before it put the first goal on the board. Geoff Wacker (Ben Hayes assist) scored in the 28th minute.
“It was a hotly contested first 20 minutes of the game,” Coupeville coach Paul Mendes said. “The first goal was really important to kind of give us a lift and confidence.”
Mitch Stevenson gave Coupeville more breathing room in the 55th minute, scoring on a penalty kick.
Sam Berggren added a goal in the 69th minute, as did Zeb Williams (Jack Caselden) in the 74th minute.
“What was good for us was the balance in the scoring,” Mendes said.
Evan Coleman was the goalkeeper for Coupeville. Chris Huttema was in goal for Nooksack Valley in the first half, Victor Luna took over in the second half.
Nooksack Valley (6-10)was eliminated from the ournament.
According to Mendes, this is the furthest Coupeville has gone in the history of the program.
“If we win one more game we will make some history,” he said.
