Edmonds: Picnic Point work party

A weed-pulling party at a park on the shores of Puget Sound is being planned by the People For Puget Sound and the Snohomish Sound Stewards for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The event is at Picnic Point Park, 12001 Picnic Point Rd., in Edmonds. Groups and families are welcome, but kids under 10 need one-on-one adult supervision.

Everett: Mariner hosts poetry contest

Students and staff at Mariner High School in the Mukilteo School District will host their second annual Art and Spoken Poetry Festival between 6 and 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Mariner commons, 200 120th St. SW, Everett.

The free community event will feature the art and poetry of students from Mariner and Aces High School.

Student art will be displayed around the commons before and during the event and will be evaluated by a panel of judges. Gift certificates ranging between $25 and $10 to a local art supply store will be awarded to first- through third-place winners.

The evening program, hosted by masters of ceremonies Jarrel King and Eric Williams, both Mariner seniors, will involve students and staff reading or reciting their own poems before an audience gathered in the commons.

Judges will determine first through third place in the poetry competition, and gift certificates worth $25 to $10 to a local book store will be awarded.

Lake Stevens: Senior housing opening

Applications will be available this week for housing at Hawkins House Senior Apartments, sponsored by Senior Services of Snohomish County.

The apartments, at 9433 N. Davies Road, will open in August. The 39-unit complex will provide affordable housing for people 62 and older who meet federal eligibility requirements. The rent for Hawkins House is no more than 30 percent of a tenant’s monthly income.

Applications, which are available beginning Tuesday, must be submitted between June 1 and June 30.

Snohomish: Art shows set this week

For the first time ever, the Snohomish School District’s Night of the Arts will take place on two days in two locations.

Glacier Peak High School will feature artwork and performances from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday by students from the south end of the Snohomish School District.

Snohomish High School will feature art and performances from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday by students from the north end.

Jane (Stewart) Wittenberg, a 2004 SHS grad, is guest artist for both events. She has a show at the Lynnwood Library until May 27.

Both events are open to the public. Adult admission is $5 and students are free. For those unable to attend the evening activities, the art show is open earlier each day at no charge for a “sneak preview” from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Night of the Arts features performances and technical demonstrations. There also is food, children’s activities and a silent auction. A variety of art forms will be represented, including photography, painting, pottery, poetry, music, dance, video and multimedia.

The shows include elementary through high school art, individual college-level Advanced Placement art galleries and local artists.
