50 YEARS AGO (1959)

Dale Johnson, 2313 Rucker Ave., and Karen Melby, 6717 Hoyt Ave., didn’t own a bicycle when they went to the All-City Playday at Forest Park, sponsored by Everett police and firefighters. Both won bikes as prizes and were pictured with firefighter Robert St. Clair and police officers Henry Collins and Charles Nicholson.

Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Brewster of Alderwood Manor were top pair at the Thursday evening contract tournament of the Paine AFB Bridge Club. W.G. Briggs and John Nelson of Lynnwood were second, with R.C. Werner and Neva Rochford of Lynnwood third.

25 YEARS AGO (1984)

The Everett Merchants were among seven teams participating in the annual Casey Stengel state championship baseball tournament beginning today in Brewster. The Merchants, who were runners-up in last year’s tourney, drew a first round bye and would play the winner of the Spanaway-Pullman game.

Slowly, but now surely, Americans were discovering an alternative to the telephone call and the U.S. Mail. Known generically as electronic mail, it was grounded in computers and still largely a business phenomenon. But with the proliferation of personal home computers, the use of electronic mail was growing.
