Stanwood student heading to D.C.
Sabrina Hillbrand, a seventh-grader at Stanwood Middle School has been accepted into the People to People World Leadership Forum.
She will join a select group of students in Washington, D.C., in early 2010, to study leadership and visit monuments and institutions.
Hillbrand, 12, was accepted based on outstanding scholastic merit, civic involvement and leadership potential.
She is the daughter of Vicky and Walter Hillbrand of Stanwood.
Local residents earn WWU scholarships
Western Washington University students Kramer Elwell of Marysville and Shawna Held of Everett received scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year.
Elwell, a freshman, received a $1,000 College of Fine and Performing Arts Dean’s Scholarship for the 2009-10 academic year.
Elwell is the son of Cory and Julie Elwell,
He earned a 3.57 GPA and is majoring in music performance. Elwell was a state technician for the College of Fine and Performing Arts. He hopes to one day pursue a career as a professional percussionist.
Held received a $1,000 Paul and Jeannette Woodring scholarship, a $1,000 Fairhaven Alumni Leadership scholarship, and a $1,000 Associated Students Academic Scholar Award scholarship.
Held is the daughter of Peter and Dee Held,
She is a junior at Western with a 3.8 GPA. She is student at Fairhaven College majoring in women’s studies and voice. Held was a resident adviser and an intern for Girls on the Run.
National Merit semi-finalists named
Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corp. recently announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists, nationwide, in the 55th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
Students from Snohomish County who are semifinalists in the program include Mollie Holmberg, Brianna Kastning and Zach Rathbun of Bothell; Jesse DeLong, Paul Koenig and Nathan Mori of Everett; Emily Drew of Lake Stevens; Sarah Carter and Matthew Landon of Lynnwood; Juliette Becker and Derek Miller of Mill Creek; and Sunita Chepuri, Jeffrey Giorgi, Dahill Kim, Mark Logue and Caitlin Stone of Mukilteo.
School employees receive Apple Award
Lake Stevens School District employees will be recognized for creating a positive, caring and productive school environment through exceptional effort, dedication or performance in their areas of responsibility.
September recipients of the Apple Award are: Sharon Ward, bus driver for Lake Stevens School District; Steven Burleigh, principal at Hillcrest Elementary; Anna Bostwick, administrative assistant for Lake Stevens School District; Robyn Stapley, paraprofessional at Hillcrest Elementary; and Anne Neuman, fifth-grade teacher at Highland Elementary.
Awards will be presented during the Lake Stevens School Board meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Oct, 14 in the Educational Service Center, 12309 22nd St. NE, Lake Stevens.
Everett resident earns MBA
Ananiah McCarrell of Everett recently earned a master of business administration from West Texas A&M University.
Degrees were conferred on 313 students during a commencement ceremony on Aug. 7.
