Marysville student a Young Leader
Marysville Middle School seventh-grader Jessica Red Elk recently accepted a nomination to represent Washington State at the National Young Leaders State Conference for the Pacific Northwest Region.
Elk was nominated by Marysville Middle School teacher Bill Wright, who recognized her for achieving academic excellence and her strong leadership potential.
Upon completion of the conference May 6 through 9 in Orange County, Calif., Elk will receive an official certificate of merit.
She is the daughter of Keith and Erin Red Elk of Marysville.
Everett man earns Eastern scholarship
Paul Lumsden of Everett was recently awarded $1,000 through the Alumni Association for the 2009-10 academic year at Eastern Washington University.
The award is to benefit a child or grandchild of an Eastern alumnus, either a freshman with a 3.5 GPA, a new transfer student with at least a 3.5 GPA, or a graduate student with at least a 3.5 GPA.
Lumsden graduated from Mariner High School, where he was on the cross-country and track teams.
He is studying communications at Eastern.
Lumsden is the son of Jeff and Lee Anne Lumsden of Everett.
Two county students Wesleyan grads
Two Snohomish County students recently graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind.
Nathaniel Billing of Edmonds graduated with a bachelor’s of science degree in exercise science. Chona Williams of Lynnwood graduated with a bachelor’s of science nursing degree.
St. Mary Magdalen names service students of month
Service Students of the Month at St. Mary Magdalen School in Everett were recently honored by the Knights of Columbus for their service at church, school and in the community.
Eighth-grader Danielle Berhard was service student of the month in September. She is a Girl Scout and vacation preschool volunteer, and helps with primary students and recycling at school.
Seventh-grader Rory Krueger was selected as the October service student of the month. He is a parish altar server, beach cleaner and Red Cross donor.
In November, sixth-grader Casey Saparto was service student of the month. She has worked in several food banks run by Volunteers of America, made blankets for the Linus Program and is an altar server in the parish.
Eighth-grader Dana Tran was the service student of the month in December. She is a crucifer at school, funeral and Sunday Masses, a volunteer baby-sitter, and helps with fundraisers in and out of school.
Harbour Pointe students of month
December’s theme for student of the month at Harbour Pointe Middle School in Mukilteo was “Communicators,” an attribute from the International Baccalaureate Profile.
The following students were selected as students of the month for best demonstrating the qualities of a communicator.
Sixth grade: Anngee Gorrell, Manolo Mercado, Kevin Seo, Lizzie Shriver and Sarah Smiley.
Seventh grade: Hanna Choi, Laura Diaz, Will Kramer and Matt Miller.
Eighth grade: Oleg Avramenko, Brian Kim, Nellie Vasiliev and Julie Yoon.
