Marysville Fire District 12 needs people to fill two seats

MARYSVILLE β Snohomish County councilmen are looking for people to fill in as Fire District 12 commissioners.
They want to make a decision quickly. Letters of interest are due by the end of this week.
βIt’s very important for us, because District 12 cannot conduct its business at this time,β Marysville Fire District spokeswoman Kristen Thorstenson said.
The district’s board of commissioners is short of a quorum and cannot vote. Two of its three elected commissioners live in areas Marysville annexed on Dec. 30. They had to resign because state law says commissioners must live in the area they represent. The expansion added 19,000 new residents, making Marysville the second-largest city in Snohomish County.
The Marysville Fire District responds inside the city and in surrounding areas. However, the city department and Fire District 12 are technically separate. Their combined board of directors includes three elected commissioners and three City Council members.
State law instructs the County Council to fill one of the vacant posts. That appointment would take effect immediately. Two commissioners could appoint a third person to serve with them.
Letters of interest to the County Council are due Friday. Councilmen plan to conduct interviews next week and make a final choice before Feb. 17, when the fire district’s board of directors is scheduled to meet next. The interim commissioners will serve until results from the November 2011 election are certified.
Want to serve?
