Prep Basketball Roundup: Arlington girls edge Kamiak
Published 11:43 pm Thursday, February 18, 2010
MARYSVILLE — Arlington used a big first half by Ginnie Wilson, a big second half by Quinn Kesselring, and the idea of redeeming a loss to Kamiak in last year’s 4A District 1 Tournament, and combined all three into one solid game Thursday night.
Arlington’s ability to breakdown Kamiak’s pressure defense allowed the Eagles to continue in the 4A District 1 Tournament in a loser-out 57-54 win over the Knights at Marysville-Pilchuck high school. Arlington faces the loser of tonight’s Monroe-Lake Stevens game. Kamiak’s season is over.
Wilson tallied 14 of her 19 points in the first half, to go along with nine rebounds, and Kesselring scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half, with each breathing life into each half for the Eagles.
“We knew that they played great defensive pressure,” Arlington head coach Nathan Davis said. “We lost to them in the playoffs last season and the seniors wanted another crack at them…our defense stepped up in the second half, Megan Abdo and Kesselring had solid games handling the pressure,” as Kamiak often utilized a full court press.
Kamiak was led by Carrie Barnes’s nine points and 14 rebounds and Lexi Burns’s 12 points, five rebounds and four steals.
“For the girls its good for them to get the first playoff win and get the monkey of their backs,” Davis said.
