TALKING POINTS
Well, it’s a series. Everett had a chance to essentially kill off the Rockets tonight after taking a 3-1 first-period led. But the Rockets scored the game’s final four goals to cut Everett’s series lead to 2-1.
Brett Bulmer’s goal with 4:00 remaining in regulation snapped a 3-3 tie. The third period was choppy to that point, with both teams looking a little tight and neither team threatening to score. But one great shift by the Rockets kept the Tips pinned and produced the winning goal.
The game seemed a little odd to me. I thought the Rockets were going to come out even more physical than they were in the games in Everett, but that didn’t really happen. The Tips didn’t play the same game they played in Everett, either. I’ll let Tips captain Zack Dailey explain:
“We weren’t getting pucks deep, we turned a lot of pucks over trying to be too cute and we tried to put skill ahead of work. Whenever you do that it doesn’t work.”
The Tips also saw their struggles on the power play return. Kelowna scored on both its power plays, needing just nine seconds to score the first and 26 to score the second.
TURNING POINT
After Everett’s Shane Harper scored to give Everett a 2-1 lead 11:28 into the first period, Kelowna coach Ryan Huska removed goaltender Adam Brown in favor of Mark Guggenberger. Guggenberger allowed just one more goal the rest of the way, and that came on a five-on-three power play.
HIT OF THE DAY
Late in the first period Dailey raced in to undercut Tyson Barrie along the boards in Kelowna’s zone.
THREE STARS
First star: Geordie Wudrick, Kelowna. Two goals give him five in the series (the Game 2 goal originally awarded to Lucas Bloodoff was changed to Wudrick).
Second star: Kent Simpson, Everett. 33 saves, though none of those stood out to me.
Third star: Bulmer. One goal, it was the game winner.
The Herald’s honorable mention: Barrie. Three assists, including the play that set up the winner.
