HONORS
Student honored for community service
Archbishop Murphy High School junior Nathan Zarate recently participated in the statewide Youth of the Year competition in Seattle. He was one of 13 youths competing.
On March 19, at the Governor’s Mansion in Olympia, Zarate, 17, learned he was not chosen to be the State Youth of the Year but he did receive a $1,000 educational scholarship in recognition of his community service.
Zarate has benefited from Leadership and Character building instruction and staff mentoring at the Mukilteo Boys &Girls Club. He has coached basketball players from fourth and fifth grade from Endeavor and Columbia elementary schools in Mukilteo for three consecutive years.
Outside of the club, he was the starting offensive lineman on the Cascade Conference championship football team.
Rotary club names students of month
The Rotary Club of Everett recently recognized students of the month for March.
The award winners were Kayley Freshman-Caffrey from Cascade High School, Maddy Huggins from Archbishop Murphy High School and Paul Koenig from Everett High School.
New members on foundation’s board
The Greater Everett Community Foundation recently announced its newest board members.
They are Ryan Blume, Bill Hecht, Bill Neumeister and Bill Rucker.
Blume is currently a senior manager in the Everett office of Moss Adams LLP and is a member of the American Institute of CPA, Washington Society of CPA, Snohomish County Estate Planning Council and the Financial Planning Association.
Hecht is a retired diagnostic radiologist. He is a member of Snohomish County Chapter of American Cancer Society, Luther Child Center and Compass Health.
Neumeister is a retired pediatrician and was the associate medical director for Blue Cross of Washington and Alaska.
Rucker is the owner of H&L Sports and Soccer West. He is a former member and president of the Everett City Council, a former president of EverTrust Bank and a member of EverTrust Foundation.
Community Transit drivers earn safety awards
Community Transit this month welcomed six coach operators into the Million-Mile Club for their long records of safe driving.
Carl Huth Jr. of Everett earned his Two Million-Mile Driver award. Five others including Reza Ghandari of Mukilteo, Cris Healy of Everett, Amjad Khalil of Lynnwood, Dorothy Saarinen of Woodinville and Diane Sassé of Lake Stevens reached Million-Mile Driver status.
It takes drivers more than 12 years without a preventable accident to achieve this honor.
Community Transit has 68 active Million-Mile Drivers, including six active Two Million-Mile Drivers.
Historic Downtown Snohomish officers elected
The Historic Downtown Snohomish Board of Directors recently elected new officers for 2010.
The new president is Kimberly McIlrath, proprietor of Faded Elegance on First Street. Deverie Wood, owner of Light in Glass Publishing, remains for a second term as vice president. Andy Papadatos, owner of the Snohomish Bakery and former HDS Board president, moves into the position of treasurer. Lisa Steffan, owner of Central Banc Mortgage on First Street, is the new secretary.
The HDS Board of Directors held its officer elections at the March 11 board meeting. The mission of Historic Downtown Snohomish is to promote, improve and preserve the historic district as the heart and soul of the City of Snohomish.
GIVING
Food bank receives 150 Easter baskets
Residents from Emeritus at Seabrook, a senior living community, delivered 150 Easter baskets on March 25 to the Lynnwood Food Bank.
The residents, family members and staff of Emeritus at Seabrook put in many volunteer hours over the past month, collecting items and assembling baskets for children of all ages.
The project was the idea of the residents and Mary Hanke, the activity director at Emeritus at Seabrook.
Soroptimists fight domestic violence
The Marysville Soroptimists recently donated $1,500 to the Domestic Violence Center of Snohomish County.
Soroptimist International is a volunteer organization for business and professional women dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world.
The club raises money through several events. The next fundraiser will be the annual garage and bake sale, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 10 at the Jennings Memorial Park Barn in Marysville.
Goddard School art auction aids Haiti
The Goddard School in Snohomish held an art fair and art auction on March 26 to raise money for Red Cross Haitian Relief.
There was a silent auction for parents to competitively bid on their child’s classroom art project. Children’s individual pieces were also available to purchase for families.
More than $2,400 was raised at the event.
