Students give to Haiti at hunger meal
Students from Immaculate Conception Our/Lady of Perpetual Help school in north Everett recently participated in a Lenten Hunger Meal.
Students ate a simple meal in silence, while teachers played music, read to the students or showed a religious video. There was reflective music played while the students took an empty paper plate, which symbolized others who must go without food.
The students donated $330. The money will go to Catholic Relief Services for Haiti.
Archbishop Murphy 6th in mock trial
The Archbishop Murphy High School Varsity Mock Trial team took sixth place at the state tournament held at the Thurston County Courthouse from March 26 to 28 in Olympia.
In addition to sixth place overall, the Archbishop Murphy team earned the state civility award for professional and courteous behavior in their trials. The Varsity team record was 3-1, with the only loss against three-time defending state champion Seattle Preparatory School.
Bothell High gets ecology grant
State Farm, in partnership with SkillsUSA, recently awarded Bothell High School $10,000 for its School Zone Anti-idling Campaign for cars. The project consists of the installation of anti-idling signs, and a public awareness campaign focused on reducing the greenhouse gas emissions emitted from vehicles waiting in the school district’s elementary- and middle-school student drop-off zones.
The students will also work with the Washington state Department of Ecology to tabulate the data.
The project is one of 12 chosen to compete in the National Leadership and Skills Conference from June 20 to 25 in Kansas City, Mo.
Students of month at Harbour Pointe
February’s theme for student of the month at Harbour Pointe Middle School was “open-minded,” an attribute from the International Baccalaureate Profile.
Open-minded learners understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities.
Harbour Pointe Middle School selected the following students who best demonstrated these qualities:
Sixth grade: Tej Asher, Esther Lee, Yasmine Myers, Austin Sonmore and Addie Turner.
Seventh grade: Mia Arzate, Sangho Bak, Matt Bettencourt and Annabelle Falloria.
Eighth grade: Gina Bartelli, Ann Dhaliwal, Kevin Kim and Neil Wang.
UW-Bothell lecturer wins fellowship
University of Washington’s Bothell campus interdisciplinary arts and sciences lecturer Anna Maria Hong recently received a fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University.
Hong has taught several writing courses at UW- Bothell, where she emphasizes the new generation of experimental writing that is designed to spark original thought and fresh approaches to creative work.
Her experience is in poetry, fiction, nonfiction and multimedia work, and can be seen in various publications including Growing up Asian-American: an Anthology, The Stranger, Seattle Magazine, American Book Review and Painted Bride Quarterly.
She will be in residence from September to May 2011.
Students honored by Rotary Club
Adanna Abakporo, a senior at Mariner High School, and Shaylin Johnson, Kamiak High School senior, were recently honored by the South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club as students of the month.
Adanna was honored as February’s student of the month. She participates in a number of programs at Mariner such as French Club, Adventure Club, Key Club, M &M Connection and HERO.
She has maintained nearly straight-A’s during her high school career and has also earned numerous awards including the Youth Challenge Award, Wesco Academic Achievement and Mariner’s Lamp of Knowledge Award.
Adanna has helped with National Honor Society fundraisers, participated in a walk to raise money for clean water wells in another country, and assisted with a food drive during the holiday season. She also helped raise money for the French Club’s travel to Europe.
Shaylin was selected as January student of the month. She is this year’s ASB president at Kamiak, a member of the National Honor Society, and makes time to participate in many school activities including Knights in Action, Drama Club, Young Life and basketball. She has been on the varsity team for three years and is team captain for the 2009-10 season. As a member of Kamiak’s leadership class, Sahylin has been involved in volunteer efforts both locally and globally. She has assisted the Rotary Club with their annual Thanksgiving basket deliveries to those in need, organized food and clothing drives, participated in the school’s HOPE holiday project and helped with fundraising auctions for Young Life.
Adanna and Shaylin both received a plaque in recognition of their achievements.
Mukilteo resident on Villanova dean’s list
Leslie Grimes of Mukilteo was recently named to the dean’s list for the 2009 fall semester in Villanova University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in Villanova, Pa.
Grimes is a senior.
To qualify for the dean’s list in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, one must be a full-time student and earn a semester grade point average of 3.5.
