2026 Lexus LX 700h Overtrail can tackle the toughest terrain

The 2026 Lexus LX 700h is the luxury carmaker’s hybrid flagship SUV. It’s available in four trims, ranging from ultimate off-road performance to ultimate extra upscale stuff.
Their names offer a big hint as to which trim is which: Overtrail, F Sport Handling, Luxury, and Ultra Luxury.
All grades get their formidable power from a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 hybrid engine generating 457 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. Full-time four-wheel drive and a 10-speed automatic transmission are other qualities they have in common.
EPA ratings are 19 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined.
I drove the Overtrail for this report. When it comes to off-road prowess, the other models aren’t weaklings by any means, but the Overtrail is more like a tour de force. It’s a dedicated, overland-ready trim with added electronically-controlled front and rear locking differentials, for a total of three. Burly 33-inch all-terrain tires wrapped around 18-inch alloy wheels are standard. To protect vulnerable areas, there’s a specialized front skid plate and a waterproof hybrid battery tray.
The Overtrail’s minimum ground clearance is 8.1 inches, pretty good already, but a hydraulic suspension system enables the vehicle to be raised up to the 12.6-inch clearance mark.
An assortment of terrain-select buttons includes just about any terrain you could encounter without leaving the planet. A hybrid crawler mode puts the vehicle into motor-only low range driving, for precision performance and elimination of gas engine surges.

Quiet and comfort reign supreme inside the massive cabin, which is finished with high quality materials throughout, pieced together in exacting detail. Standard features include heat, ventilation and massage for the front seats, a heated steering wheel, cooling box in the center console, four-zone climate control, rear manual sunshades, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM, and a mostly intuitive infotainment system with 12.3-inch touchscreen.
My tester was equipped with a delicious optional Mark Levinson premium audio system.
On the road, Overtrail feels like a handful. It’s great at what it was made for, tackling hardcore off-road terrain, and can be called fun-to-drive if that’s what you enjoy most. But it can be a bit rough on the highways and freeways around here, and on winding narrow roads, a hallmark of Snohomish County, there’s body lean.
The 2026 Lexus LX700h Overtrail is a three-row SUV with seating for seven, but my tester had an optional Overtrail 2-Row Package with 5-Passenger Seating. It reduced the total price by $1,750. This is most likely the preferred arrangement for serious overlanders and their tons of gear. In keeping with Overtrail’s theme, the cargo area is huge. By the way, there’s a standard 2,400-watt AC inverter in the cargo area to power camping gear, tools, and other items that might need it.
