Super Kid: Granite Falls High’s Chelaina Crews
Published 6:23 pm Sunday, April 4, 2010
Nice surprise: Chelaina Crews was named a commended student in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship competition. That means she placed in the top 5 percent of more that 1.5 million students in the country based on scores from the Preliminary SAT test. “I didn’t even study,” she said. “I just did it for practice and then I got the letter. It was pretty neat.”
College plans: She applied to Harvard and Washington State University’s honors college. “Harvard is my dream school,” she said.
Major: Undecided.
Busy: Chelaina carries a 3.9 grade point average and is the student body president. She’s a cheerleader, is in her fourth year of varsity softball and is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, HERO, Spanish clubs and LINK Crew.
Hot corner: She plays third base. “You are close, and you have to be on your toes.”
No tech: Her academic achievements were accomplished without a computer at home because “it was never really in the budget,” she said. She makes good use of computers at the Granite Falls library near her home and at school.
Favorite author: Tamora Pierce who wrote a series of books for young adults with strong female characters. “I love to reread them.
Transformation: She said she has come a long ways in four years, getting increasingly involved in her school. “My freshman year I didn’t talk much, and now I’m giving speeches in front of the whole school,” she said.
Recommended books: “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald and “Great Expectations” by Charles Dickens.
Small town: Granite Falls is neither too big nor too small. It’s a place where you can make lifelong friends, she said. She is among a group she calls the “Fab 5,” which she expects to get together long after they graduate from high school.
Right fit: The high school, too, is “the perfect size” where it’s not so big: “Everyone knows everyone’s secrets.”
Good times: She likes the annual Battle of the Classes where each grade level competes in activities that demonstrate spirit. That includes Fashion Disaster Day. “We look pretty ridiculous sometimes,” she said.
