SEATTLE — A student from Kenmore is the University of Washington’s first Putnam Fellow winner since the annual math competition for undergraduates began in 1938.

The university said last week that William Johnson was one of the top five finishers in the contest sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America. The other four are from Harvard, Yale and MIT.

More than 4,000 students competed this year, including 19 at the UW where four others placed in the top 500.

Johnson has another year of study at the UW. He is majoring in mathematics and computer sciences.
