PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Jackson bats erupt in key win over Edmonds-Woodway
Published 11:33 pm Friday, April 23, 2010
MILL CREEK — A week ago the Jackson baseball team’s bats fell asleep as the Timberwolves dropped three straight games, culminating in an especially frustrating 1-0 loss to Mountlake Terrace last Friday.
This Friday night the Jackson bats completed their reemergence on the way to an 8-0 blowout of Edmonds-Woodway in a key Wesco South victory.
The T-wolves needed just the two runs they pushed across in the second, thanks to a three-hitter over six innings tossed by Cody Schmale. Shortstop Mike Wishko put an exclamation point on the game and the week in the bottom of sixth with a grand slam.
“To see our bats come alive a bit has been kinda nice,” Jackson coach Kirk Nicholson said.
Catcher Tony Flatt also homered for Jackson.
Schmale was the hard-luck loser against Terrace despite surrendering just two hits — one was a solo home run. Schmale took out his frustration on the Warriors, who managed one extra-base hit when Ryan Budnick roped a double.
“He wanted to get it done today,” Nicholson said about his starting pitcher. “He did a nice job containing their bats.”
Sam Brown hit 3-for-3 with a double for Jackson but his biggest play may have come in the field. Brown likely saved a pair of runs, according to Nicholson, with a diving catch in the top of the third inning in centerfield. He also retired the final three Warriors on the mound.
Having lost twice to league-leader Kamiak, Jackson’s one-game deficit to the Knights in the Wesco South standings is as good as two because of the tiebreaker. But with four regular season games to go, Nicholson isn’t concerned with Kamiak considering the way his team has played the past three games.
“All we can do is play the next four like we’ve played the last three,” he said. “If we play like we played this week it will work out fine for us.”
