PREP NOTEBOOK: Three Everett wrestlers to compete in college

Life on the Everett High School wrestling team is rough but rewarding.
Jerry Contreras, an Everett senior, and his pals “tore each other apart” day after day in grueling wrestling practices over the past four years, Contreras said. But the Seagulls always supported each other off the mat, he said, and — along with plenty of encouragement from their parents and coach Brien Elliott — kept each other motivated.
The dedication and perseverance paid off for Everett wrestlers Contreras, Alec Bird and Danny Lopez. The seniors met on Friday at their school and signed their respective NCAA National Letter of Intent paperwork, cementing their college plans. Bird, a two-time Class 3A state champion at 215 pounds, signed with Colorado School of Mines; Contreras (fourth in the state this year at 160 pounds) signed with Lindsey Wilson College; and Lopez (third in the state last year at 171 pounds and fifth this year) signed with Trine University.
A fourth Everett wrestler, senior Evan Paeth, also attended the ceremony. Paeth, a 2010 state qualifier, plans to join the Navy and become a SEAL.
“Wrestling pretty much paved my way to college,” said Bird, who earned his second consecutive state title in February at the Tacoma Dome.
With nonstop effort and their desire to help each other improve, the Seagulls became a tight-knit group. “This was my family for the past four years,” said Lopez.
Soon, the Everett wrestling “family” members will go separate ways. But they will forever be united by the hard work that helped them get an opportunity to improve their education and continue wrestling at a high level.
Warriors win Wesco sports medicine competition

Thirteen five-person teams representing Western Conference schools participated in the Jeopardy!-style competition that included topics such as anatomy, injury evaluation, fitness, nutrition, rehabilitation and first aid, Stanwood athletic trainer Matt Brennan said. In the semifinals, E-W beat Mountlake Terrace and Stanwood downed Marysville-Pilchuck. Stanwood senior Kyla McGovern won the solo speed-taping contest. Kit Blue and Jen Wright from Summit Rehabilitation of Marysville were the moderator and judge for the competition.
