Fishing has been good recently in the state’s top smallmouth water — The Columbia River between Umatilla, Oregon and John Day Dam — and fishing pressure is picking up. State checks on Lake Umatilla recently tallied 102 anglers averaging one walleye for each four hours on the water, while 4 bass fishermen checked had averaged a smallmouth for each hour of fishing.
Farther downriver, checks in the Camas/Washougal area showed anglers averaging just over 1 walleye each.
