EVERETT — A 16-year-old has been arrested for investigation of setting a fire that caused extensive damage to a greenhouse at Mariner High School south of Everett earlier this week, officials said.

The boy, who had been suspended from Mariner, was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of second-degree arson, Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said.

The suspect was booked into the Denney Juvenile Justice Center in north Everett.

“They expect to file charges early next week,” Hynes said.

The greenhouse is used three periods a day, primarily by special education students, Mukilteo School District Andy Muntz said.

A passer-by taking a walk noticed black smoke coming from the structure just after 5 a.m. Wednesday. No one was injured.

By the time they arrived, flames had burned through the roof of a storage area in the greenhouse.

A Snohomish County deputy fire marshal and his dog trained to sniff for ignitable liquids investigated the fire scene.

The damaged building was one of three greenhouses on the campus at 200 120th St. SW.

Hynes said today damage could exceed an original estimate of $30,000.

The fire did not affect the beginning of the school day Wednesday.
