TALKING POINTS

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen an Everett team work over Vancouver the way the Tips did during the second period tonight.

Over the past five seasons watching the Giants play the Tips has often been a lesson in punishment. Punishment on the scoreboard, punishment on the shot clock, punishment on the body. Even when Everett won it almost felt painful.

But it was a totally different story tonight, particularly in the second period. Everett buzzed around the ice like an angry swarm of bees, and the Giants were at a loss at how to handle it. The Tips scored four times during a nine-minute span of the second to take a commanding 5-0 lead.

Everett then let up in the third period and allowed Vancouver to take the initiative. However, the Giants were never able to threaten the lead.

The biggest difference in Everett’s performance between tonight and Friday’s 4-3 season-opening victory over Seattle was the passing. The Tips connected far better than they did in their opener, and some of the passes that led to goals were sublime.

TURNING POINT

The goal that opened the floodgates for Everett came 3:36 into the second period. The Tips broke two-on-one, and Markus McCrea fed a perfect centering pass to Tyler Giebel, who snapped a shot under Vancouver goalie Brendan Jensen for his first career WHL goal.

HIT OF THE DAY

Midway through the second period Everett’s Landon Ferraro produced shades of Radko Gudas when he undercut David Musil behind the Vancouver net.

THREE STARS

First star: Tyler Maxwell, Everett. Two goals, it was his second straight two-goal effort.

Second star: Ferraro. One goal, one assist and several big hits. He was everywhere tonight.

Third star: Kellan Tochkin, Everett. Two assists, when I mentioned sublime passes it all began with him.

The Herald’s honorable mention: Brendan Gallagher, Vancouver. One assist, he was the one Giant who was making things happen.
