Front porch: Classes start at University of Washington Bothell

The University of Washington Bothell welcomes students back today.
UW Bothell expects 3,000 new and returning students on campus.
For Welcome Week, expect workshops such as “Start the Quarter on the Right Foot”; concerts on the lawn with Sleep Steady, Jonathan Kingham, Eclectic Approach and Lions Ambition; a Happy Hour Mocktail Party (an educational and comedic presentation on alcohol awareness); and a movie under the stars with “Toy Story 3.”
All activities are free to students.

Domestic violence event to feature UW coach
Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County will have its fifth annual Hope Within Luncheon on Oct. 8 at the Comcast Arena in Everett. University of Washington head basketball coach Lorenzo Romar will be keynote speaker.
Cost of the luncheon is $10.
The nonprofit group operates a 24-hour hotline and other programs to assist victims of domestic violence.

The city of Arlington has scheduled an open house to give people a chance to meet the job candidates for fire chief. The open house is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in City Council chambers, 110 E. Third St.
