TALKING POINTS
It was an exciting, hard-hitting game tonight, and the Tips rallied in the third period for an important win. Everett trailed 2-1 after two periods and was in danger of finishing its eight-game season-opening homestand with four straight defeats. But the Tips overcame the loss of captain Landon Ferraro, with Tyler Maxwell scoring both the tying and game-winning goals in the third.
Ferraro went down with 12:27 remaining in regulation and the scored tied 2-2. Ferraro took a hit in the corner and stayed down for several minutes before being assisted off the ice, putting no weight on his right leg.
That could have been a deflating moment for the Tips, but Everett responded positively, and Maxwell converted a feed from Kellan Tochkin less than two minutes later for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Maxwell continues to be on fire for the Tips. He now has 10 goals in eight games, including three multiple-goal efforts.
Everett also received some big efforts from fourth liners Manraj Hayer and Jari Erricson. The Tips had already lost winger Campbell Elynuik to an apparent uppper-body injury late in the second period before Ferraro went down. Everett coach Craig Hartsburg was forced to get creative with his lines, with Hayer and Erricson both getting expanded roles. Both performed admirably, with Hayer getting his first career WHL point assisting on the game winner.
The extent of the injuries are currently unknown. However, Hartsburg was hopeful Ferraro’s injury wasn’t as serious as it initially appeared.
TURNING POINT
I’m not sure I’d say there was a true turning point in this game. Even though Everett outscored Calgary 3-0 in the third period, this was a pretty evenly-played game throughout.
HIT OF THE DAY
Early in the second period Elynuik and Cody Fowlie combined on a double hit that sent a Calgary defenseman (didn’t see who) flying.
THREE STARS
First star: Maxwell. Two goals and one assist, he still trails Chilliwack’s Ryan Howse by one for the league lead.
Second star: Tochkin. One goal and one assist, both his points came on pretty plays.
Third star: Kris Foucault, Calgary. One assist, strong on the puck and consistently kept the puck in the zone on the power play when Everett tried to clear.
The Herald’s honorable mention: Hayer. One assist, played a crucial role filling in for Ferraro down the stretch.
