Got a hankering for pickled herring?

Published 7:25 pm Monday, October 18, 2010

With the beginning of the holiday season upon us, we dither about costumes, gifts, lights and party favors.

Families have their own traditions, but it could be fun to learn something new that may add yumminess to traditional feasts (or not).

Learn how to make pickled herring for families and guests.

A class is planned at 9 a.m. Saturday at Bothell Sons of Norway, 23905 Bothell-Everett Highway.

Glen Kensmoe teaches the tricks of pickling the little fish. It costs $5 for those who aren’t members of the Sons of Norway.

Register now and you can take home some pickled herring.

The fourth annual Keep Out The Cold outerwear drive is happening now.

Hailey Trumble, 15, a sophomore at Edmonds Woodway High School and Shawnda Murdock, 17, a senior at Kings High School, are at the helm. The pair collected more than 9,000 items of jackets and sweaters last year, plus nonperishable food.

The food was given to local food banks for distribution and the clothing was spread out among agencies in Snohomish County to help low-income families stay warm in the winter months.

Each year, a moving container is donated by Jim Meuting at Hansen Bros. in Lynnwood for a month, to hold the goods.

“We ask that the clothing be usable and clean,” says Shannon Trumble, Hailey’s mother. “This year the girls have decided to add warm blankets to the collection as well.”

The storage pod is located at Ordinary Things, 610 Fifth Ave. S. in Edmonds. Drop off donations 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, through Nov. 8.

The first ever Monroe Community Pageant O’ Pumpkins is planned for 6 to 10 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary of the Valley Catholic Church at 601 W. Columbia St. in Monroe.

Church teenagers plan to fill the big parish lawn with a thousand lit jack-o’-lanterns.

“Yes, it will take a small miracle, but we believe in miracles,” says Susan Howard, event coordinator and parishioner. “If we succeed it will likely be one of the largest displays of jack-o’-lanterns in the state, and that’s something I want to see.”

The pageant includes a pumpkin-carving competition, juried by city officials and community leaders, entertainment, activities for children and refreshments.

Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

The church aims to raise $100,000 in nine months to send a group to Rome and Assisi, Italy, and Madrid, Spain, for World Youth Day 2011.
