Matthew House director takes photos for calendar

Published 7:28 pm Tuesday, October 19, 2010

Matthew House in Monroe offers a 2010 calendar.

Nothing unusual about that type of fundraiser, but the photographer deserves a mention: executive director Linda Paz snapped the photographs.

“I take pictures in my spare time,” Paz says. “I was trying to figure out a fundraiser. I was looking at a calendar and thought ‘I could do that.’”

Money raised will benefit Matthew House, which supports families of those incarcerated in Washington prisons. Men disappear behind bars, says Paz. Women and children are left to manage on the outside.

Prison visitors may drop by Matthew House, located near the reformatory entrance, and find a food pantry, used clothing, overnight apartment, counseling and a hot cup of coffee.

The ministry relies heavily on private donations to keep the door open. Paz says she prays the fundraiser goes well.

Warner Blake plans to stick to the script Saturday at the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery in Snohomish.

Even though it’s a graveyard tour, a week before Halloween, Blake will not tell any ghost stories.

But those on the tour can share their own creepy tales.

The tour begins at 10 a.m. at 8601 Riverview Road. Members of the Snohomish Historical Society may walk along for $5 and others pay $10.

It’s happening rain or shine, so dress appropriately. Be prepared to walk on uneven ground.

Meet at the caretaker’s garage.

That sounds kind of spooky.

Who doesn’t need a good party hat?

“Hatlets” will be offered Saturday in Everett. A hatlet is a small party hat made using recycled plastic bags.

The Arts Council of Snohomish County offers the 12th annual Wearable Arts Fair, Gal-apalooza, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Historic Monte Cristo Hotel, 1507 Wall St.

Gallery store manager Elizabeth Smith says folks will find retro hip fabrics, funky country clothing, beady velvet bags, accessories, vintage clothing, massage and spa services and jewelry.

Marjorie Burr from Everett will be there with glass beads, not necessarily to put on party hats.

Good news in the homeless dog world: At Barktoberfest Oct. 11 in Bothell, 75 dogs and puppies were adopted.

“It was a great day and we are really happy with the results,” says organizer Andrea Logan.
