TALKING POINTS
First off, great work Tips fans. Tonight was Pink the Rink night at Comcast Arena to raise awareness for breast cancer, and more than $39,000 was raised for Providence Comprehensive Breast Center. There was also plenty of pink garb in the stands to set the mood, so from that standpoint the night was a rousing success.
As for the game, it was a pretty well-played contest by both teams. Everett probably had a little more possession, particularly early in the game, but the Americans ground it out.
The real story was goaltending. Tri-City’s Drew Owsley was excellent tonight, particularly with his glove. Meanwhile, Everett’s Kent Simpson had a couple rough moments that led to Tri-City’s goals. If Simpson’s on top of his game tonight, the Tips win.
While Everett’s losing streak stretched to five games with the loss, there was progress. The Tips showed some determination in the offensive zone and they avoided penalties. Now Everett just needs to either start getting a little puck luck, or stop running into hot goalies.
Interesting Tri-City note: The Americans are 11-4-1-0, have played just four games at home, and already have their eastern swing and Prince George trip out of the way. Plus, the Americans have done much of that without stars Brendan Shinnimin and Kruise Reddick. Wow.
TURNING POINT
Midway through the first period Everett was coming on, tying it at 1-1, then received a 1:51 five-on-three power play. The Tips peppered the Tri-City net, but Owsley kept everything out, including a miracle save on Landon Ferraro. That kill prevented Everett from taking control of the game.
HIT OF THE DAY
Early in the second period Tri-City’s Mason Wilgosh laid out Ferraro as Ferraro turned while on the rush.
THREE STARS
First star: Owsley. 38 saves, and he turned away both Everett shooters in the shootout.
Second star: Parker Stanfield, Everett. One goal and one assist, his goal was a thing of beauty.
Third star: Ryan Murray, Everett. One assist, another plus-2.
The Herald’s honorable mention: Campbell Elynuik, Everett. One goal and one assist, played with purpose.
