TALKING POINTS
How about that, the Tips have themselves a winning streak.
Everett dealt with adversity, overcoming Chilliwack’s tying goal in the dying seconds of regulation, then an early Bruins power play in overtime. That gave Ryan Murray the chance to score the game-winner in OT.
The key to Everett’s victory was the penalty kill. Chilliwack came into the game with the league’s top-ranked power play, and the Tips have struggled on the kill. However, Everett shut out Chilliwack on the power play at 0-for-5.
None of those kills was bigger than the one in OT, and goalie Kent Simpson was pretty much single-handedly responsible for that one. The Bruins fired off eight shots on goal during that four-on-three, which began just 24 seconds into overtime following a bad checking-from-behind penalty by Scott MacDonald. But Simpson turned them all away, doing a good job controlling his rebounds. As a result, the Tips won in overtime despite being outshot 8-1 in the extra period.
Everett’s back-to-back victories over Tri-City and Chilliwack were the team’s first since Oct. 2, so it’s been a long time coming.
TURNING POINT
The overtime penalty kill gets the nod here.
HIT OF THE DAY
There were some decent hits, but not a whole lot worth mentioning. There was an amusing moment in the third period when a Chilliwack defenseman — I think it was Jesse Pauls — crashed into his own goalie as he was racing back to block a partial breakaway.
THREE STARS
First star: Simpson. 38 saves, he was Everett’s top penalty killer tonight.
Second star: Murray. Scored the game winner, he was announced as the second star, though Kellan Tochkin was the one who skated out.
Third star: Brandon Manning, Chilliwack. One goal, the defenseman already has 11 this season.
The Herald’s honorable mention: Tochkin. Two goals, was probably going to be the second star before a last-second change.
