TALKING POINTS
It was a good road victory by Everett tonight. The Tips jumped out to an early 3-0 lead because of the play from the Tyler Maxwell-Josh Winquist-Kellan Tochkin line. Then the Tips did a good job of salting the game away in the third after Seattle pulled back within one.
Everett was once again without three top forwards because of injury, and once again Winquist stepped up to help fill the void. Winquist had a goal and an assist, giving him four points over the past two games. That’s one more point than he had during his first 18. And Maxwell and Tochkin look very comfortable being centered by Winquist. If Winquist can sustain his play, the coaching staff has some interesting options once Landon Ferraro gets healthy.
Maxwell scored two of Everett’s goals, those coming just 27 seconds apart. That was the fastest two goals scored by one player in Everett history, eclipsing the 45-second mark set by Torrie Wheat way back in November of 2004.
Everett’s marathon stretch of three straight three-in-threes is almost complete. With just one game remaining the Tips are 5-4 during the stretch.
Finally, take a look at the Western Conference standings. Subtract Portland from the mix and it’s essentially a nine-team logjam. On any given night it seems a team can move four or five places in the standings.
TURNING POINT
Maxwell’s two goals midway through the first period came on the same shift, giving the Tips a commanding three-goal lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
HIT OF THE DAY
Late in the first period Seattle’s Jacob Doty put a huge shoulder check on Jari Erricson, sending Erricson’s helmet flying. Seattle outhit Everett in a big way tonight.
THREE STARS
First star: Maxwell. Two goals and an assist gave him his second straight three-point game.
Second star: Brenden Dillon, Seattle. One goal and one assist, got stronger as the game went along.
Third star: Charles Wells, Seattle. One assist and showed off good speed to get it.
The Herald’s honorable mention: Tochkin. Two assists on a visionary pass and a good screen in front, and probably deserved a third as his hit freed the puck up for Everett’s first goal.
