Ryan Murray takes next step toward World Juniors

Hockey Canada released its list of players invited to try out for its squad for the upcoming World Junior Hockey Championships today, and Everett defenseman Ryan Murray is getting his chance. Despite being a late birthdate 17-year-old, Murray was one of 12 defensemen invited to compete for what is likely seven available roster spots. Now, all three of Canada’s returning players from last year’s silver-medal team are defensemen, so earning a roster spot is going to be a challenge. However, it’s very rare for a player whose NHL draft year is still two years away makes Canada’s U-20 team, and by being invited to this camp Murray has a legitimate shot.

Canada’s camp is Dec. 12-15 in Toronto, so Murray will miss at least one Tips game and maybe more. Should he make the team Murray will be headed to Buffalo, N.Y., for the tournament that begins Dec. 26.
