LYNNWOOD — With his team trailing by 8 early in the third quarter, Meadowdale girls basketball coach Troy Parker turned to his bench and the Maverick reserves came through.

Led by junior Lisa Sagdahl, the Meadowdale backups sparked a 12-point run that gave the Mavericks the lead and they held on for a 66-61 nonleague victory over Kamiak Monday at Meadowdale High School.

It was the first win of the season for Meadowdale (1-2) after losses to Lake Stevens and Arlington.

“For a nonleague win it’s awful important for us,” Parker said. “The nice thing is we had so many contributions from so many people. It’s always nice when you can go in the locker room after a game and point to so many people and say ‘you had a big part in the win.’”

Kamiak led 19-11 early in the second quarter when Parker turned to his bench, led by Sagdahl, who had 14 points off the bench. The reserves started a 14-2 run that gave the Mavericks a lead they didn’t give up, though Kamiak did get as close as 1 late in the third quarter before Meadowdale pulled away in the fourth.

“(Sagdahl) was the spark that got us going,” Parker said. “She did a great job of turning the play in our favor.”

Margreet Barhoum had 17 points, Michaela O’Neill had 12 points, 11 rebounds and five steals and Ndey Sonko had 10 rebounds for Meadowdale, which opens up league play Friday at home against Everett.

Lexi Burns had 17 points and Kate Blackwell had 13 points for Kamiak (1-2), which plays at Cascade Wednesday.
